Most nurses we meet own 5 or 6 accounts and 20-plus funds they never picked on purpose. At Midflorida Credit Union, every review ends with a one-page roadmap: what you own, what pays your retirement paycheck, and what changes next. And before we suggest selling a fund, we write down the tax bill of selling it, so you decide with that number in front of you.

You work 12-hour shifts, some of them nights, and the last thing you want on a day off is a fund menu. Your hospital 403(b) may sit next to a pension, a 457(b) and an IRA from a job 3 hospitals ago. Midflorida Credit Union looks at all of them together, cuts the overlap, and writes down which account pays you first once you stop working.

Midflorida Credit Union is an investment management firm that helps nurses and allied health workers with hospital 403(b)s or pensions, shift work and little time to review accounts, write a roadmap.
A call often starts with a kitchen-table problem: an old 403(b), a current hospital account, a pension choice, and no easy way to tell how they fit. We reduce the clutter to fewer accounts, fewer funds and a one-page roadmap you can explain to your family.
Midflorida Credit Union investment management brings retirement accounts, pension choices and income decisions into one working view for households with $500K or more in investable assets. Clients meet remotely by video conference or telephone, which matters when your workday starts before dawn or ends after visiting hours. The office is at 991 Polk Street, Houston, TX 77002, United States, while the work can serve households throughout the country.
The first review puts each account on paper: the hospital 403(b), prior employer accounts, IRAs, cash reserves and any pension election deadline. Then we identify what needs action now and what can stay put. A rollover is not automatic; the current plan's investment choices, fees, creditor protections and paperwork all deserve a look before money moves.
People commonly come to us with one of these situations. The useful first step is smaller than a big account change, and it keeps the next decision from being rushed.
Account consolidation can reduce paperwork, but keeping an account can be sensible when its plan features are better for your situation.
| Situation | First step |
|---|---|
| Old hospital 403(b) | Read plan statement |
| Pension election packet | Compare payment choices |
| 3 overlapping funds | Map each holding |
| 457(b) payout form | Check timing options |
| Social Security decision | Set income timeline |
Work with Midflorida Credit Union follows the decisions in front of you, not a generic calendar. A review rhythm may begin in winter with 403(b) statements and beneficiary information, move to spring with pension forms or tax documents, and return in summer or fall when a retirement date, Social Security choice or 457(b) payout becomes more immediate.
During the first part of the year, we list accounts and confirm who owns what. Before a pension deadline, we put the monthly annuity and lump-sum choices beside the income you will need. If a Roth conversion strategy is under consideration, your CPA's estimate of the tax bill belongs in the conversation before assets are sold.
Later reviews focus on the retirement paycheck. We compare expected spending with pension income, Social Security and the accounts meant to fill the gap. Some years need more attention because a job ends, a spouse retires or a hospital plan changes. Other years need a shorter review. That is fine.
Keep pension election papers and 457(b) distribution forms when they arrive. Their deadlines can be much shorter than the time you spent saving.
Consider this hypothetical example: Dana, a 59-year-old nurse, has $620K in a current 403(b), $140K in an old 403(b), $90K in an IRA and $50K in cash. She also expects a small pension at retirement. Her immediate problem is not a lack of funds. It is that no one has mapped how the 5 pieces will pay for life after her last shift.
Midflorida Credit Union would first gather the pension estimate, both 403(b) statements and the IRA holdings. The old 403(b) might be a candidate for a rollover, but only after its rules are compared with the destination account. Dana's cash is also reviewed against near-term spending, because investing all $50K could leave her selling investments after a bad month.
For illustration, assume $500K of Dana's investments is in funds costing 0.6% annually, and comparable available funds cost 0.2%. The difference is 0.4%. $500K × 0.4% = $2,000 annually. That does not prove a switch is right, since investment options and tax consequences matter, but it gives Dana a number worth investigating.
Markets can fall, and an investment account may be worth less than the amount put into it. A roadmap cannot remove that risk; it can set aside money needed soon so every market drop does not force the same decision.
A fund change should be tied to a reason you can name, such as overlap, cost, risk level or a retirement date.
The cost for your own situation is put in writing before you choose to work with Midflorida Credit Union. You can read it away from the meeting, compare it with the work being proposed and ask what it covers. No fee percentage belongs in a generic example because the scope depends on the accounts and decisions involved.
Fee discussion comes after the accounts and the work are understood. A household considering a 403(b) rollover and pension election may need a different level of work than someone whose accounts are already organized. If the value of the work is not clear, waiting is a reasonable choice.
Do not approve an account move until you understand the written fee quote and the reason for the move.
Communication at Midflorida Credit Union centers on scheduled reviews and decision-driven calls, with video conference and telephone available for households whose shifts make office visits impractical. You should not need to decode a stack of statements alone. When a deadline appears, the discussion stays on that deadline: a pension election, a hospital departure, a 457(b) choice or a retirement paycheck change.
A review report should show the accounts being discussed, the holdings or categories that matter, recent activity and the next item needing a decision. It should also show the roadmap in plain language, including what remains unchanged. If a number comes from your plan administrator, custodian, Social Security record or CPA, we identify where it came from.
Bring the document that triggered the concern. A pension packet, 403(b) notice or January tax form usually gives the conversation a useful starting point.
The person who issues a pension or plan form, usually your employer or plan administrator, sets its deadline and confirms its terms.
Midflorida Credit Union's position shows up when a retiree needs cash after a bad market month. We would rather identify near-term spending and keep that portion in cash or stable reserves than sell a long-term investment simply because the calendar says it is time to take money. Think of it like keeping groceries in the pantry before a long string of night shifts.
Say a household needs $4K monthly from investments after pension and Social Security income. That is $48K annually. If the roadmap holds 2 years of that gap in cash reserves, the starting reserve is $96K. The investment portfolio still carries market risk, but the household has 24 months before it needs to sell long-term holdings to cover that stated gap.
That cash amount is not a rule for everyone. A pension, other income, health costs, debt and the size of the account change the figure. The point is that each dollar has a job, so a retirement paycheck does not come from whichever fund happens to be easiest to click.
Before changing investments, write down the next 24 months of known spending and income sources.

We move your hospital 403(b) into an IRA or new plan without a surprise tax bill.
403(b) rollover →The lump sum and the monthly pension priced out in dollars, with a clear recommendation.
Pension lump sum or annuity →5 scattered accounts become 2 or 3, holding a short list of low-cost funds.
Account consolidation →A monthly retirement paycheck mapped from your pension, 403(b) and Social Security together.
Retirement income planning →Yearly Roth conversion amounts sized to your bracket, with the tax bill estimated first.
Roth conversion strategy →Your hospital 457(b) payout election chosen before the deadline, not after it passes.
457(b) payout choices →A Social Security claiming age picked around your pension and your spouse's benefit.
Social Security timing →Your cost depends on what you bring, and Midflorida Credit Union quotes it in writing for your situation before you agree to anything. We look at your accounts first, then send the number in dollars. For comparison, any 1% fee on $500K works out to $5K annually.
The $500K minimum counts investable assets across your accounts, so a 403(b), an old IRA and a brokerage account add up together. A pension paid monthly isn't investable, but Midflorida Credit Union still builds it into your roadmap because it changes how much risk the rest can carry.
Your first call is set around your rotation: note your days off on the request form and Midflorida Credit Union arranges a video or phone conversation then. Keep your latest 403(b) statement and pension estimate nearby. Those 2 documents are enough for the first talk.
An advisor reads your actual statements and talks with you directly. In the first conversation you'll cover your pension options, the funds in your 403(b) and the age you'd like to stop working, and the advisor explains what your one-page roadmap would include.
Yes. Midflorida Credit Union can review both accounts, compare the plan features and show what would need to happen if a rollover is considered. Keeping the accounts separate may still make sense in some cases. The decision should account for investment choices, account rules, paperwork and your expected retirement date.
The right pension choice depends on the monthly payment offered, the lump-sum amount, your other income, your health and whether a survivor benefit matters to your household. Put both choices beside your expected retirement spending. A pension election form can be hard to change after its deadline passes.
A 457(b) payout choice should be reviewed alongside pension income, Social Security timing and money needed in the first years after work ends. The payment schedule can affect how much you need from other accounts. Your plan administrator can confirm the choices and election deadline in your specific plan.
Investment management can help you separate a short-term market decline from a real change in your retirement needs. The first review is usually about how much cash you need soon, what you own and whether a sale would disrupt the rest of your roadmap. Selling after every decline can lock in a loss.
Social Security timing should be considered with your pension amount, work plans and the income your accounts need to provide. Claiming earlier creates payments sooner, while waiting changes the monthly amount. For people born in 1960 or later, full retirement age is 67, but that fact alone does not choose the date.
