Midflorida Credit Union’s Nest Egg Calculator, a retirement savings calculator

Updated

Midflorida Credit Union’s retirement savings calculator estimates what your savings could become by retirement and separates your deposits from investment growth.

Enter the balances and monthly savings you use today, then test a few assumptions. The Nest Egg Calculator is an illustration, not a forecast of market results.

A simplified estimate, not a forecast — markets move unevenly and tax rules have details this tool skips.

How the Midflorida Credit Union estimate is calculated

The calculator begins with your current savings, applies your expected annual return in monthly pieces, and adds your contribution at the end of each month. It repeats that math for every month until retirement, then shows the future balance, its value in today’s dollars after inflation, and the split between deposits and growth.

For illustration, this example starts with $300K, adds $1,000 monthly, and uses a 5% annual return. After 20 years, deposits total $540K: the original $300K plus $240K of monthly additions. The difference between $540K and the $1,224,826 balance is growth under those assumptions.

Example: $300,000 saved, $1,000 a month, 5% a year compounded monthly
YearBalanceYour deposits
3$387,195$336,000
6$488,470$372,000
9$606,097$408,000
12$742,718$444,000
15$901,400$480,000
18$1,085,705$516,000
20$1,224,826$540,000

Does the result cover the gap your hospital benefits leave?

A useful result gives you a starting balance to compare with the spending your pension, Social Security, and other dependable income will not cover. A worrying result is one that leaves a large monthly gap even after you enter your usual 403(b) contribution and a reasonable retirement age.

Use this rule before changing funds: if your expected pension and other dependable income do not cover your basic monthly bills, write down the remaining monthly gap and test the calculator with inflation turned on. That number matters more than a single account’s recent return.

Shift work can make savings uneven. A nurse who adds $300 in some months and nothing in others can enter an average monthly contribution, then run a second estimate using the lower amount to see the range.

What the Nest Egg Calculator cannot tell you

The Nest Egg Calculator does not know your pension formula, future spending, account fees, tax treatment, or when you will begin a retirement paycheck. It also cannot predict markets; an account’s value can drop below the amount you put in, particularly over shorter periods.

Midflorida Credit Union puts the 403(b), IRA, pension estimate, cash reserve, and expected spending on one short roadmap that you can explain at home. Before Midflorida Credit Union suggests a fund change, we put the account’s job beside the other accounts, so an extra fund has to earn its place.

For households with $500K in investable assets, Midflorida Credit Union can discuss a written cost for their own situation before they decide. Reviews can take place by video conference or telephone for households around the country.

The return field can distort the whole estimate

Entering a high return because the last few years felt strong can make the final number look settled when it is only an assumption. Try 3 versions: a lower return, a middle return, and a higher return, while keeping inflation in each version.

The gap is often larger than expected. On the example’s $300K starting balance and $1,000 monthly contribution, the calculator’s stated 5% assumption produces $1,224,826 at 20 years, but that figure is not a promise.

Midflorida Credit Union: common questions

Should I combine my hospital 403(b) and IRA in one calculator entry?
Yes, you can combine accounts when you want a quick estimate of your total retirement savings. Add the balances and monthly contributions only if the return assumption is reasonable for the group. Keep pension income separate, because a pension is not an investment account balance that compounds in the same way.
Can I use the calculator balance as my retirement paycheck?
No, the displayed balance is a starting point, not a monthly retirement paycheck. You still need to estimate spending, pension income, Social Security, taxes, and how long the money may need to last. Midflorida Credit Union uses those details to turn an account balance into a practical spending discussion.
What annual return belongs in a retirement savings calculator?
Use a return assumption you can live with even if markets have a poor stretch. Run several versions rather than relying on one optimistic number, and keep the contribution amount unchanged so you can see what the assumption alone changes. The calculator’s result remains an illustration, not a market prediction.
Why does the calculator show a value in today’s dollars?
Today’s-dollar value estimates what the future balance may buy after inflation reduces purchasing power. A future balance can look large while covering less than expected at retirement. Comparing both figures helps you discuss future spending in terms that resemble the bills you pay now.
